A devastating accident occurred on Tuesday at the Vedanta Limited power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district, resulting in the loss of 14 lives and leaving 19 individuals injured. The calamity struck around 2:30 PM when a boiler tube, carrying superheated steam, exploded, showering workers with scalding steam that reached temperatures of approximately 600 degrees Celsius.
The incident took place in Singhitarai village, where many workers were present during their lunch break. According to reports, the explosion was sudden and violent, catching many off guard. An unnamed official confirmed that the victims included workers who were enjoying their meal and others who were moving about the premises at that time.
Among the workers affected was Ajit Naskar, who hails from West Bengal. Naskar recounted that he and his colleagues had just begun to prepare for painting work when the explosion occurred. “We were at a height of 17 meters, and I heard a blast followed by a thick cloud of smoke. In a panic, I managed to hide inside a cupboard for safety,” he shared with the media. He noted that around 40 to 50 workers were engaged in painting activities on the site during the unfortunate incident.
Such incidents raise serious concerns about safety protocols and the maintenance of industrial facilities, especially in a country where rapid industrial growth often overshadows regulatory oversight. The Chhattisgarh power plant, part of Vedanta’s extensive operations, has faced scrutiny before regarding safety standards, making this incident particularly alarming.
Authorities are expected to launch a thorough investigation into the blast, with a focus on the factors that led to the explosion and the adequacy of safety measures in place at the plant. The local administration and firefighting teams responded promptly to the scene, providing immediate assistance to the injured and working to assess the situation. As the community grapples with this tragic loss, questions surrounding worker safety and corporate accountability continue to loom large over the future of industrial operations in the region.
