In a significant political shift in Bihar, Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the state’s chief minister on Wednesday, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to assume this position. This transition comes in the wake of Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar’s resignation, who held the chief ministerial post for nearly two decades.
Choudhary, previously the deputy chief minister under Kumar’s administration, was elected as the leader of the BJP’s legislative party shortly after Kumar stepped down. His election as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar was also confirmed within the same day, signaling a strategic move for the BJP as it consolidates power in the state.
Kumar’s resignation was notable, occurring after he secured a seat in the Upper House of Parliament on March 16, making this his first term as a Rajya Sabha MP. During his tenure, Kumar has been a dominant figure in Bihar politics, being sworn in as chief minister ten times. His recent electoral gains for the JD(U) were substantial, with the party winning 85 seats in the latest assembly elections, a significant increase from the 43 seats it secured in the previous elections of 2020.
Despite JD(U)’s strong performance, the BJP, contesting 101 constituencies, emerged as the single-largest party in the state, winning 89 seats. This shift in political power dynamics raises questions about the future of governance in Bihar and the ongoing relationship between the BJP and JD(U), which have experienced both collaboration and tension over recent years.
The backdrop to this political realignment is Kumar’s expressed ambition to serve in various legislative roles at both state and central levels, a desire he announced while campaigning for the Rajya Sabha elections. As Bihar navigates this new chapter under Choudhary’s leadership, the implications for policy and governance will be closely observed by political analysts and citizens alike.
