Vinesh Chandel, the director of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday in New Delhi. His arrest is linked to a money laundering investigation tied to a suspected coal smuggling operation in West Bengal, as reported by PTI.
According to sources, Chandel was detained under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and subsequently presented to a special court on the same evening. I-PAC has played a crucial role in managing election campaigns for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), including the significant 2021 Assembly elections, and is currently involved in the party’s strategy for the upcoming polls scheduled for April 23 and April 29, with vote counting set for May 4.
The ED’s crackdown on Chandel follows a series of investigations initiated by a first information report (FIR) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in November 2020. This investigation pertains to an alleged coal smuggling syndicate that has been accused of stealing and unlawfully excavating coal from Eastern Coalfields Limited. The ED had previously conducted searches at Chandel’s residence in Delhi, as well as at the homes of other I-PAC officials, including director Rishi Raj Singh in Bengaluru and former Aam Aadmi Party communications chief Vijay Nair in Mumbai.
This latest development emerges amidst ongoing scrutiny of financial irregularities associated with the coal sector in West Bengal, which has raised significant concerns over corruption and governance in the state. The TMC, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has faced allegations of involvement in various scams, further complicating the political landscape as the state approaches its elections.
As the investigation unfolds, the implications for I-PAC and its role in political campaigning could be substantial. The consultancy has been instrumental in shaping electoral strategies and enhancing party visibility in a competitive political arena. The ED’s actions against Chandel signal a heightened focus on accountability and transparency in political financing in India.
