In a significant development for press freedom in Assam, local press associations have raised serious concerns regarding the safety of journalists following an attack on the office of the Assamese newspaper Asomiya Pratidin. This incident occurred in Lakhimpur just a day after the recent Assembly elections, prompting allegations that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is orchestrating systematic assaults on the media.
The attack on Asomiya Pratidin’s office, described by the publication as a blatant act against press freedom and democratic principles, did not result in any injuries among the staff. However, the implications of such an attack are far-reaching, raising alarms over the increasingly hostile environment for journalists in the state. Following the incident, authorities have initiated a first information report (FIR) to investigate the attack, as reported by North East Now.
In response to the attack, the Gauhati Press Club convened a protest meeting where several prominent media figures voiced their concerns. Nitumoni Saikia, editor of the news channel Pratidin Time, emphasized that while the media has faced challenges in the past, the current climate under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is unprecedented. Saikia pointed out that inquiries into the religious affiliations and ownership structures of media houses have become routine under the current administration, an alarming trend that threatens the independence of the press.
Pankaj Nath, president of the All Assam Journalists’ Association, urged journalists across the state to unite against such aggression and to proactively defend their rights. He underscored the need for a collective voice to counteract the increasing intimidation faced by media organizations in Assam. As journalists grapple with these challenges, the solidarity within the press community becomes essential in safeguarding the integrity of journalism.
The incident at Asomiya Pratidin serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the media in various regions of India, particularly in states where political tensions are high. As the investigation unfolds, the implications for press freedom and the safety of journalists in Assam will remain a critical issue for both local and national audiences.
