The Congress Party has called on the central government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to prioritize national interests over electoral and ideological considerations amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia. This statement came during a resolution passed at a Congress Working Committee meeting held in New Delhi on Friday.
The party welcomed the recent announcement of a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States, describing it as a crucial step towards de-escalation, renewed diplomacy, and constructive dialogue. The Congress emphasized the importance of international law, condemning the targeted assassinations of heads of state, military actions that violate legal norms, and attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure as grave offenses against humanity and a rules-based global order.
In its resolution, the Congress insisted that any sustainable resolution to the conflict must adhere to established international frameworks, such as the Geneva Conventions, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Paris Agreement, and the United Nations Charter. The party’s stance reflects a commitment to diplomatic engagement and respect for human rights in international relations.
The Congress also highlighted the implications of the conflict for India, noting that the ceasefire presents a vital opportunity to reassess the impact of ongoing hostilities on national security and diplomatic relations. Concerns were raised regarding the adverse effects on India’s energy security and the strain on relationships with neighboring countries, suggesting that the current administration’s approach has resulted in a deterioration of India’s standing in the region.
Criticizing the BJP-led government’s foreign policy, the Congress accused it of adopting a ‘myopic, xenophobic, and unprincipled internationalism’ that has alienated India from its neighbors. The opposition party voiced its belief that a more measured and principled approach is essential for restoring India’s influence and fostering better diplomatic ties within its extended strategic neighborhood. The Congress urged the government to engage the opposition in formulating a coherent strategy in response to the West Asia crisis, reaffirming its commitment to national interests above partisan politics.
