The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has officially severed its partnership with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, led by former West Bengal minister Humayun Kabir, ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. This decision comes after a video surfaced online, purportedly featuring Kabir making controversial claims about a financial agreement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at destabilizing the current Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
In the video, which was shared widely on social media by the TMC, Kabir allegedly stated that he and the BJP had struck a deal worth Rs 1,000 crore to undermine Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration and mislead the Muslim electorate. The implication of such a claim is significant in the politically charged atmosphere of West Bengal, where the Muslim community constitutes a substantial voter base.
Humayun Kabir swiftly dismissed the allegations, asserting that the video was a manipulated deepfake, part of what he characterized as a politically motivated smear campaign against him. He emphasized that the content of the video does not reflect the truth and called for a more responsible discourse in political dialogues.
In response to the unfolding situation, BJP leader and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar commented that the party has no ties to the video or its content. He stated, “We don’t know anything about the video. It is Humayun Kabir’s video, and it is he who will clarify what it is and what it isn’t.” Majumdar further asserted that the BJP does not view Kabir as a matter of concern, framing the political landscape as primarily a contest between the TMC and the BJP.
Following these developments, AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, announced its decision to withdraw from the alliance, citing the need to uphold the integrity of the Muslim community and rejecting any collaboration that could cast doubt on their principles. This break from Kabir’s party signifies a critical shift, potentially impacting the political alliances and strategies in the lead-up to the elections in West Bengal. AIMIM’s announcement indicates a commitment to maintaining clarity and transparency within its political engagements, especially regarding issues that concern minority communities.
