The Delhi High Court has turned down a bail plea filed by British arms consultant Christian Michel, who is embroiled in the notorious AgustaWestland helicopter scam. The decision was made on Wednesday, as Justices Navin Chawla and Ravinder Dudeja dismissed the petition, citing a lack of substantial merit. This ruling also included a rejection of Michel’s challenge against the provisions of the 1999 extradition treaty between India and the United Arab Emirates.
The AgustaWestland case revolves around a controversial Rs 3,565-crore helicopter deal that was finalized under the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. The agreement was put on indefinite hold following the arrest of the head of Finmeccanica, the parent company of AgustaWestland, in Italy on allegations of bribery linked to the contract. Michel is one of the three accused middlemen whom Indian investigative agencies believe facilitated the deal.
Michel was apprehended on December 22, 2018, after being extradited from the UAE, and has since been in custody. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are jointly investigating the corruption allegations associated with the AgustaWestland deal. The CBI claims the contract resulted in a loss to the Indian exchequer amounting to approximately 398.21 million euros, or around Rs 2,666 crore.
In his recent petition to the High Court, Michel sought to overturn a previous trial court decision from August 7, 2025, which had dismissed his application for bail. However, the bench upheld the trial court’s ruling, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The AgustaWestland case continues to be a significant point of contention in Indian politics, raising questions over transparency and accountability in defense procurement. As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications of this case may resonate not only within the corridors of power but also among the electorate, who are increasingly concerned about corruption in governance.
