Renowned director Suresh Triveni has returned to the comedic genre with his latest film ‘Maa Behen,’ now streaming on Netflix. This follows his impressive foray into feature films, beginning with the critically acclaimed ‘Tumhari Sulu’ in 2017, which was a feminist comedy that struck a chord with audiences. Triveni has since explored diverse themes through gritty thrillers like ‘Jalsa’ (2022) and the upcoming ‘Daldal’ and ‘Subedaar’ set to release in 2026. With ‘Maa Behen,’ he brings back the essence of humor, this time featuring strong female leads who navigate life’s chaotic challenges.
‘Maa Behen,’ features an ensemble cast, led by the iconic Madhuri Dixit in the role of a disreputable single mother, alongside rising stars Triptii Dimri and Dharna Durga portraying her resilient daughters. The narrative unfolds in a pulp-inspired milieu, where the trio of squabbling women must unite to confront an unexpected crisis when a corpse is discovered in their living room. The film also showcases performances from actors such as Ravi Kishan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, and Arunoday Singh, adding depth and flavor to the storyline.
In a recent interview, Triveni expressed his excitement over the film’s reception, describing the response as overwhelming. “My phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the release,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of sparking discussions around the film. He believes that art should elicit conversation, whether it pertains to the narrative, the craft, or the performances. This has certainly been realized, as audiences are engaging in debates about the film’s themes and execution.
The film was shot over an intense period of just 41 days, primarily on set with limited outdoor filming. Triveni revealed that this deliberate choice was part of their creative vision, focusing on crafting a unique cinematic experience. The collaboration with co-writer Pooja Tolani, based on a story by both Triveni and Tolani, showcases their combined effort to bring a fresh perspective to the film’s narrative.
As fans and critics alike ponder the possibility of a sequel, Triveni remains tight-lipped but hints at the potential for more stories within this vibrant universe. Given the film’s positive reception and the chemistry of the cast, a follow-up could very well be on the horizon. As ‘Maa Behen’ continues to gather traction, audiences await to see how Triveni’s journey unfolds next.
