Recent data obtained through the Right to Information Act reveals a grim situation in Manipur, where at least 731 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have died in relief camps and temporary shelters since the ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. This statistic sheds light on the severe humanitarian crisis that has persisted nearly three years into the conflict, as reported by the Times of India.
The information was released by the state home department to activist and writer Hareshwar Goshwami following a directive from the Manipur Information Commission. The mortality figures have been compiled from various district administrations and reflect the dire consequences faced by those displaced by the violence.
Churachandpur district has been particularly affected, recording the highest death toll at 248. Other districts reporting significant casualties include Bishnupur with 151 deaths, Kangpokpi with 128, and Imphal West with 94. Smaller numbers of fatalities were noted in Kakching (60), Imphal East (25), Jiribam (13), Thoubal (11), and Tengnoupal (1). Disturbingly, the data also details 25 unnatural deaths among the IDPs, with Churachandpur alone accounting for six such incidents, including drownings and a case of sexual assault.
The ongoing conflict has displaced over 43,000 individuals, many of whom continue to live in precarious conditions in relief camps. Nearly three years after the outbreak of violence, these camps serve as temporary shelters for families forced to flee their homes. The government’s inadequate response to their plight raises questions about the long-term support and rehabilitation for these vulnerable communities.
As the situation evolves, the need for comprehensive solutions to restore peace and aid for the affected populations remains urgent. The loss of life and ongoing suffering of those in these camps highlight the far-reaching impacts of the ethnic tensions that have gripped Manipur, emphasizing the critical importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict while providing immediate relief and support to those in dire need.
