The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a prominent party in Tamil Nadu, has announced that it will not participate in the upcoming meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc scheduled for June 8. This decision stems from sentiments expressed by DMK members who feel deeply aggrieved by what they perceive as a betrayal by the Congress party, a long-standing ally.
The DMK’s criticism is primarily directed towards the Congress’s recent decision to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government, led by actor Vijay, following the Assembly elections. This alliance has sparked considerable unrest within the DMK ranks, leading to accusations from DMK leader TR Baalu who has stated that the Congress has forsaken the electorate that placed its trust in them.
In a significant political development, two Congress MLAs, S Rajesh Kumar and P Viswanathan, were inducted into the Tamil Nadu Cabinet on May 21. This marked a historic moment, as it was the first time in 59 years that Congress joined the state Cabinet. The move has raised eyebrows within the DMK, which believes that the Congress’s actions undermine the coalition’s unity and the trust of the voters.
Given the backdrop of these events, DMK representatives made it clear that their absence at the June 8 meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) is a direct response to the Congress’s involvement. They argue that such participation is incompatible with the principles of collective governance that the alliance aims to represent.
The DMK’s decision reflects broader tensions within the opposition alliance, which has been striving to present a unified front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming elections. As political dynamics shift, the effectiveness of the INDIA bloc will largely depend on how well its member parties can navigate internal conflicts and maintain solidarity.
