In a tragic incident on Saturday evening, a three-storey building near the Saket metro station in Delhi collapsed, prompting swift rescue operations. Fire services received an emergency call at approximately 7:45 PM, leading to the deployment of five firefighting vehicles to the scene. By the time rescue teams arrived, local residents had already managed to pull three individuals from the rubble.
The structure, located in Saidulajab, consisted of a ground floor and three upper levels, with construction ongoing on the third floor. Officials from the Delhi Fire Services have not yet confirmed whether the building was privately owned or government property. The collapse occurred as the building fell onto a nearby tin shed canteen where children were having dinner, resulting in some being trapped underneath the debris.
This building, which also housed a coaching centre, several cafés, and office spaces, became a scene of chaos as rescue personnel worked diligently to find individuals still trapped. Dharamveer Singh, an official from the district magistrate’s office, indicated that it was believed six to seven individuals remained stuck in the wreckage, and their faces could be seen from outside the collapsed structure.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been engaged in rescue operations, employing specialized equipment and techniques to reach those trapped. As the situation developed into the early hours of Sunday, visuals from the scene depicted a large gathering of emergency responders working tirelessly to save lives, creating a sense of urgency and concern among the local community.
The incident has raised questions about building safety regulations and the ongoing construction practices in urban areas. Such collapses highlight the need for stringent oversight on construction projects to prevent future tragedies. Authorities are expected to launch an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collapse to ensure accountability and enhance public safety.
