Hansraj College in Delhi Suspends 30 Students Over Allegations of Misconduct and Social Media Defamation

In a significant disciplinary action, Hansraj College, affiliated with Delhi University, has suspended 30 students amid serious allegations of misconduct during an annual festival. The college administration has taken this step in response to claims of violence and the defamation of the institution on various social media platforms, as reported by The Indian Express.

Between April 20 and April 25, the college issued five notices outlining the suspensions, which notably included four student union office-bearers. Principal Rama Sharma emphasized the need for such measures to uphold discipline and ensure a conducive academic environment, asserting that it is unacceptable to tarnish the college’s reputation with false allegations online. “Maximum students come to Hansraj College to study,” she stated, highlighting the institution’s esteemed status. “Their academic performance should not be disturbed.”

The first notice, dated April 20, specifically cited former student union chief Parth Srivastava for his alleged involvement in acts deemed as indiscipline. These included making derogatory comments about both teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as defaming the college itself. The administration revealed that Srivastava had previously been offered multiple chances to address the disciplinary committee alongside his parents but neglected to attend. When he finally appeared alone on March 23, he reportedly showed no remorse or acknowledgment of his actions.

Srivastava, who claims he is being unfairly targeted, has suggested that his suspension is a consequence of his participation in protests earlier this year. He has also filed a Right to Information request, which has prompted further scrutiny into the college’s disciplinary processes. In the wake of these events, the college is facing criticism from some quarters, with opinions divided over the appropriateness of the sanctions imposed.
