Odisha Electoral Chief Emphasizes Thorough Verification After Nearly 10 Lakh Voter Names Flagged for Deletion

In a significant development regarding voter registration in Odisha, Chief Electoral Officer RS Gopalan has instructed electoral registration officers to rigorously verify voter details before proceeding with the deletion of names from the electoral rolls. This directive follows allegations concerning the erroneous removal of approximately 9.8 lakh names during an electoral mapping initiative aimed at the special intensive revision of voter lists.

The mapping exercise, conducted across the state from January to March, involved booth-level officers who identified these names for deletion based on criteria such as death, migration, duplicate entries, or other potentially dubious matches. However, these officers lack the authority to unilaterally delete names from the electoral rolls, raising concerns about the integrity of the process.

In response to these issues, Gopalan acknowledged the receipt of numerous complaints alleging wrongful deletions, particularly in cases where voters were still alive and eligible to vote. Reports also surfaced indicating that some booth-level officers had not performed adequate field visits or proper verification before flagging these names for deletion. This has sparked a debate about the thoroughness of the electoral mapping process and the potential impact on voter representation.

Gopalan noted that on average, between 7 to 9 lakh names are normally removed from Odisha’s voter lists each year due to reasons such as deaths and residential shifts. However, he admitted that the recent surge in flagged names was somewhat elevated due to the door-to-door mapping initiative undertaken by booth-level officers in preparation for the revision exercise.
