In a sharp rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address, the Opposition has accused him of distorting facts and turning an official speech into a platform for political attacks. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge voiced his frustration, asserting that Modi’s claims regarding the defeated legislation were misleading and intentionally deceptive.
During his address to the nation on Saturday, Modi criticized Opposition parties for blocking the passage of the Union government’s bill aimed at amending the 2023 Women’s Reservation Act. This legislation, known as the Constitution 131st Amendment Bill, was aimed at redrawing electoral boundaries but was described by Kharge as a blatant attempt to further the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) interests rather than enhance women’s representation.
Kharge firmly contested Modi’s characterization of the bill, stating, “It was not an amendment to the Women’s Reservation Bill. This was purely a delimitation bill designed to create divisions and alter the electoral landscape in favor of the BJP.” His comments reflect a broader concern among Opposition leaders that the ruling party is manipulating legislative processes to consolidate its power.
The Constitution 131st Amendment Bill, which was rejected by the Lok Sabha on Friday, required a two-thirds majority to pass. However, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) lacks sufficient numbers in either House of Parliament, making support from Opposition parties crucial for the bill’s success. The defeat of this bill has heightened tensions between the ruling party and its rivals, as both sides maneuver for political advantage ahead of upcoming elections.
Modi’s address also included remarks directed at the Opposition, framing their rejection of the bill as a refusal to support women’s rights. This statement was met with skepticism from Opposition leaders, who argue that Modi’s rhetoric is a diversion from the real implications of the proposed legislation. As the political landscape in India continues to shift, the clash over the Women’s Reservation Act and related issues remains a focal point for party politics.
