A special court in Bengaluru has sentenced Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Yogeshgouda Goudar, a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The verdict was announced on Friday, following a conviction of Kulkarni and 15 others earlier this week for their roles in a crime that shook political circles in Karnataka.
The incident dates back to June 2016 when Goudar was brutally killed, a case that has since seen extensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI’s inquiry revealed a complex web of criminal conspiracy, leading to charges against Kulkarni and his accomplices for murder, obstruction of justice, and even rioting. This comprehensive probe underscored the serious nature of the crime, which took place amidst rising political tensions in the state.
As part of the ruling, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on Kulkarni. His legal troubles began in November 2020 when he was arrested, but he managed to secure bail from the Supreme Court in August of the following year. However, the Supreme Court revoked this bail in June 2025, highlighting concerns over his attempts to influence witnesses during the trial—a significant factor that contributed to the court’s harsh sentence.
While several serious charges were upheld, Kulkarni was acquitted of violations under the Arms Act. The special court’s ruling emphasized the necessity of holding political figures accountable for their actions, as it revealed a premeditated plot to eliminate a political rival. Kulkarni, who represented the Dharwad constituency during two separate terms, including a comeback in the 2023 elections, faces a long stint behind bars following this landmark judgment.
This case reflects broader issues within Indian politics, where incidents of violence and political rivalry often intersect. As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications of this verdict may reverberate through Karnataka’s political landscape, raising questions about governance, accountability, and the rule of law in the region.
