Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a fervent appeal to the Opposition on Friday, urging them to support the proposed amendments to the Women’s Reservation Act and the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. This plea comes at the outset of a specially convened three-day session of Parliament that commenced on Thursday, during which the Union government introduced three critical pieces of legislation aimed at altering electoral boundaries and advancing women’s representation in legislative bodies.
The notable 2026 Constitution 131st Amendment Bill, one of the three bills presented, aims to ensure a minimum representation of women in Parliament and state Assemblies. However, to be enacted, it necessitates a two-thirds majority in Parliament—a challenging milestone for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which currently lacks this majority in either house. Consequently, the support of Opposition parties becomes pivotal for the passage of this landmark amendment.
Taking to social media, PM Modi emphasized the need for consensus, stating that the government has addressed various concerns and misconceptions regarding the proposed legislation with “facts and logic.” He expressed his hope that all political factions would deliberate thoughtfully and make a sensitive decision to endorse women’s reservation, underscoring the importance of empowering ‘Nari Shakti’ (Women Power) in the legislative process.
As the session progresses and the bills are set for discussion and voting, the political landscape in Parliament remains charged. The call for bipartisan cooperation highlights a broader need for unity in advancing women’s rights, especially in a country where gender parity in political representation continues to be a pressing issue.
In addition to the Women’s Reservation amendment, the proposed delimitation measures aim to redefine electoral constituencies, a process that can have far-reaching implications on the political representation of various regions in the country. As the nation moves towards the next general elections, the outcome of these bills could significantly impact the political dynamics, particularly in advancing the role of women in governance.
