In a significant political development, West Bengal Police have initiated legal proceedings against former minister Humayun Kabir. This action comes in response to a viral video where Kabir allegedly makes shocking claims regarding an agreement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at destabilizing the Mamata Banerjee-led government.
The video, circulated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on social media platforms, purportedly shows Kabir stating that he and the BJP had struck a deal worth Rs 1,000 crores to create discord and mislead the Muslim community in the state. Kabir, who is also the president of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, has been accused of instigating communal tension and disrupting public order ahead of the crucial Assembly elections.
Following a complaint filed by Haji Mohammad Parvez Siddiqui, the national president of the Rashtriya Alpasankhayak Arakshan Morcha, a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at the Suri police station in Birbhum district. The complaint highlights concerns about the potential for Kabir’s statements to incite violence and exacerbate communal discord during a sensitive electoral period.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, Kabir has vehemently denied making such statements, asserting that the video in question is a product of artificial intelligence technology designed to create deepfake content. He termed the incident a politically motivated smear campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation and undermining his party’s credibility.
The timing of these events is critical, as West Bengal gears up for Assembly elections scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with vote counting set for May 4. The political atmosphere is charged, with various parties vying for influence and support in a state known for its vibrant yet contentious electoral battles.
In a related development, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) announced its decision to sever ties with Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party in light of these allegations. This move further complicates the political landscape as alliances shift and parties recalibrate their strategies in anticipation of the upcoming elections.
The unfolding situation encapsulates the intense scrutiny and polarization characterizing the current political climate in West Bengal, raising questions about the impact of such allegations on voter sentiment and the overall electoral process.
