In a significant policy change, Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Wednesday that madrasas recognized as schools in the state will now observe Sunday as their weekly holiday instead of the traditional Friday. This move is part of a larger initiative aimed at reforming minority education across Uttarakhand.
Historically, madrasas in India have served primarily as religious seminaries for Islamic education, and Friday has commonly been observed as a day of rest and prayer. By implementing this change, the Uttarakhand government hopes to standardize academic practices and administrative protocols for all minority educational institutions in the region.
The decision follows the government’s earlier action in July when it dissolved the statutory madrasa board. Following the enactment of the Uttarakhand Minority Education Act on July 1, 2025, a new regulatory body, the Uttarakhand State Authority for Minority Education, was established to oversee educational institutions affiliated with six recognized minority communities: Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis. This consolidation is aimed at fostering a more cohesive education system across different communities.
During the announcement, Dhami emphasized the importance of uniformity in educational standards across all communities. “We have already introduced a Uniform Civil Code in the state, and it is essential that we have a common system for everyone,” he stated. This approach reflects a broader governmental strategy to integrate various minority educational frameworks under a singular regulatory umbrella in order to promote equality and coherence.
The shift in the weekly holiday also raises questions about its implications for religious practices and community engagement within these institutions. Educators and community leaders will likely need to navigate the adjustment while maintaining the spiritual and cultural values that are integral to madrasa education.
