The Election Commission of India has taken decisive action following serious allegations of irregularities in the electoral rolls of the Pilibhit Sadar Assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh. On Wednesday, the Chief Electoral Officer of the state announced that legal proceedings would be initiated against certain officials accused of mishandling the intensive revision process of voter lists.
This decision comes in the wake of claims by the Indian National Congress, which asserts that more than 13,000 names have been altered since the final electoral roll was published in April. According to Congress representatives, while the voter identity card numbers and serial numbers remained unchanged, the names of these voters mysteriously changed in the official records.
Furthermore, the Opposition party has highlighted that over 800 individuals were removed from the voter list despite still residing within the constituency. In contrast, approximately 2,600 new names were reportedly added, raising questions about the legitimacy of these entries. Collectively, these alleged discrepancies affect more than 16,000 individuals in the Pilibhit Sadar region, casting a shadow over the integrity of the electoral process.
During a press briefing, Congress leader Rajendra Pal Gautam emphasized the gravity of the situation, asserting that the modifications to the voter lists occurred between July and September, three months after the final rolls were released. He expressed concern over the potential disenfranchisement of voters, stating, “When a voter checks the final draft, they see their name, address, EPIC number, and serial number, leading them to believe their voting rights are intact. However, if their name is altered later, they could be informed on election day that they are not on the voter list, despite holding a valid EPIC.”
The developments in Uttar Pradesh come at a crucial time as the state gears up for upcoming elections. This incident has raised alarm bells regarding the transparency and accuracy of the electoral process, prompting calls for further investigation and accountability. The Election Commission’s swift response signals its commitment to maintaining the sanctity of the democratic process, but the effectiveness of these measures will be closely scrutinized by both political parties and the electorate.
