In a significant development, two Indian nationals have been charged with election-related fraud in the United States as part of a larger investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Amandeep Kaur and Kamlesh Shah were among a group of 28 green card holders implicated in unlawful voting activities during the upcoming 2024 presidential elections.
According to the DOJ, both individuals allegedly registered to vote and cast ballots despite lacking the legal right to do so as permanent residents. While green card holders enjoy the benefits of living and working in the U.S., they do not possess voting rights in federal elections. The charges highlight the ongoing efforts to maintain electoral integrity and prevent fraudulent practices.
Shah reportedly registered to vote on the day of the November 2024 election, casting his ballot unlawfully. Kaur, who is actively pursuing U.S. citizenship, fraudulently registered in December 2022 and participated in the election, further compounding her legal troubles. The DOJ has indicated that these actions constitute felony offenses, each carrying a potential penalty of up to five years in federal prison.
As part of the recent crackdown, authorities conducted raids across California, leading to the arrest of 11 individuals involved in similar activities. This initiative is aimed at safeguarding the electoral process and ensuring that only eligible voters participate in the democratic exercise.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter emphasized the importance of verifying citizenship status in the voting process, asserting that integrity in U.S. elections is paramount. The charges against Kaur and Shah serve as a stark reminder of the legal boundaries surrounding voting and the serious consequences that come with violations. As the 2024 presidential elections draw closer, the DOJ’s actions reflect a commitment to uphold the law and protect the foundational principles of democracy.
