In a dramatic display of anger and grief, protesters in Manipur gathered outside the residence of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in Imphal on Monday, laying the bodies of two men killed in recent violent clashes attributed to suspected militants. This tragic event underscores the escalating tension in the state, which has been marred by ethnic strife since May 2023.
The deceased, identified as Arubam Ronil, 35, and Lairenlakpam Inaobi, 51, were part of a group collecting firewood near the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts when they came under attack. The area is marked by ethnic divisions, with Imphal East predominantly populated by the Meitei community, while Kangpokpi has a Kuki majority. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation turned chaotic when police attempted to disperse the assembled crowd using tear gas, prompting the protesters to transport the bodies to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.
On the same day, it was reported that four others sustained injuries in the attack, one of whom, 32-year-old Ksh Sushil, later succumbed to his wounds, bringing the total death toll to three. The ongoing violence reflects the deep-rooted tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities that have been inflamed in recent months. The unrest has historical precedents, with clashes initially breaking out in May 2023, leading to significant unrest in the state.
The current political climate in Manipur is fraught with tension, as the state had witnessed President’s Rule following the resignation of Bharatiya Janata Party leader N Biren Singh amid allegations concerning his handling of the unrest. The circumstances surrounding these recent killings are now adding fuel to an already volatile situation, as communities grapple with the aftermath of violence and seek justice for the victims.
The situation in Manipur highlights the broader issues of communal harmony and governance in the region, with many citizens calling for stronger measures to ensure safety and peace. As tensions continue to rise, the state finds itself at a crossroads, with local leaders urged to address the underlying issues contributing to this cycle of violence.
