In a significant turn of events, Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, has been placed under preventive arrest amidst ongoing protests in central Delhi. This was confirmed by the political campaign on Saturday, following a series of demonstrations that have stirred public sentiment across the capital.
Dipke, who was reportedly on his way to Connaught Place for the “Lehra Do Tiranga” demonstration—meant to showcase the national flag—was detained on Friday. His arrest comes in the wake of protests triggered by the prior detention of several leaders from his campaign, including Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das, and Ajinkya Shinde, who were apprehended just days earlier.
Neha Bora, a prominent student leader and president of the All India Students’ Association, was also caught up in the fray. She was detained during a flash protest near Barakhamba Road, where demonstrators were voicing their demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Following several hours of detention, Bora was released, though she has voiced her concerns over the state’s handling of the protests, stating, “Law and order are being flouted in every possible way. Ordinary citizens are treated as if they were hardened criminals, a practice that has persisted in this country for a long time.”
The protests against the Chief Election Commissioner have gained momentum not only in Delhi but also across various parts of India, reflecting a growing discontent among citizens regarding electoral processes and governance. The demonstrators have criticized the perceived erosion of democratic values and have called for accountability from those in positions of power.
As of now, the whereabouts of Abhijeet Dipke remain uncertain, with reports indicating that his legal team has yet to meet him following his preventive arrest. He is expected to be presented before a magistrate court later today, a move that will be closely monitored by both supporters and critics alike. The developments surrounding these protests underscore the ongoing tensions in the political landscape of India, as citizens continue to demand transparency and justice.
