Harish Rawat Resigns from Congress Roles Amid ED Investigation of Cash and Gold Seizure

Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and prominent Congress figure, Harish Rawat, announced his resignation from two key party positions on Saturday. This decision comes on the heels of an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that resulted in the recovery of a significant amount of cash, gold, and other valuables from his personal assistant, Chandan Singh Jeena.

The ED’s actions, which took place on Thursday in Dehradun, are part of an inquiry into alleged irregularities surrounding the 2016 Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission (UKSSSC) Gram Panchayat Vikas Adhikari exam. According to the agency, they seized an impressive Rs 32 lakh in unaccounted cash, alongside 13 gold coins, seven gold chains weighing approximately 200.5 grams, and 12 luxury watches from Jeena’s residence.

During Rawat’s tenure as Chief Minister from 2014 to 2017, Jeena held the role of Officer on Special Duty (OSD), which has led to scrutiny regarding the former Chief Minister’s connections to the ongoing investigation. Rawat expressed his acknowledgment of the situation, stating, “It is true that Mr. Jeena served as my OSD, and I have held various positions both in the party and in the government during my tenure.” His resignation from the party roles is seen as a precautionary measure amidst these serious allegations.

In addition to the searches conducted at Jeena’s home, the ED also targeted other individuals connected to the commission, including the former chairperson and secretary of the UKSSSC, in a bid to unravel the alleged malpractices associated with the exam process.
